How many times have you heard that? But what do you do if you notice movement in what should be a stationary part? All maintenance personnel have had to make the decision of when to take a machine down for repairs. Do you let the part hammer away until the machine will no longer run, or do you shut the machine off before further damage is done?
Evaluate the situation. Determine what and when something worse will happen if nothing is done to correct the current situation.Decide how to repair the equipment and estimate the amount of downtime required.Meet with the sales and/or production people to determine a “convenient time” to disrupt the work flow over that machine.Be sure that all parts needed for the repair are on hand before starting your repairs.
In evaluating the obvious, many times the question of “Why did this happen?” is over looked. Don’t fall into this trap. Know how the machine works and research the possibility of another situation creating the problem you are currently experiencing.
Always estimate more downtime than you actually think the job will take. Remember: The true cost of a repair is directly proportional to the amount of downtime. You do not want your production people standing around waiting to run a machine that is inoperative.
Recheck with production one day prior to starting the repair to insure that plans have not been changed.Recheck to make sure that all the needed “commercial” parts are on hand at your facility.Once the repair work has begun, remember to locate the original cause of the machine failure.
